Prop Firm Consistency Rules Explained

A consistency rule caps how much of your total profit can come from a single day. It rarely fails your account outright — instead it gates you: you keep trading until your best day is small enough, relative to everything else you made, for the next step to unlock.

What a consistency rule actually caps

Every version of the rule is the same fraction:

Best single-day profit ÷ Total profit = Best-day share

If that share is above the firm's cap, you are out of rule. The three jobs the rule does, depending on the firm and the stage, are:

  • Evaluation gate. You cannot pass the challenge until your best day is under the cap (FTMO 1-Step, FXIFY Lightning).
  • Funded gate. The rule only bites once you are funded, and it gates withdrawals rather than the account itself (FXIFY 2-Phase Classic, Apex Performance).
  • Payout gate. Each payout cycle re-checks the rule, and in some firms the calculation resets after every payout (Maven Instant, FundingPips).

One measurement detail changes everything: what counts as "total profit". FTMO's new Consistency rule measures the best day against total profit including losing days, which FTMO itself calls stricter than its old Best Day Rule, which measured only against the profit of positive days. A losing day therefore dilutes your best-day share under the new rule — and, on firms that exclude losing days from the denominator (Maven Instant counts profitable days only), it does not.

The comparison table

Firm / programmeStageCapWhat happens if you are over it
FTMO 1-StepEvaluation50%Not a breach. Keep trading until your best day is 50% or less of total profit. Completable in as few as 2 trading days in theory — FTMO calls 2 days "a very exceptional case" and 3 days the practical minimum.
FTMO InstantFunded (reward eligibility)30%Results do not count towards a monetary Reward until the 30% requirement is met.
FTMO 2-StepBoth phasesNoneFTMO lists no consistency objective for the 2-Step; the requirements are 4 trading days per phase.
Apex Performance AccountsFunded, at payout request50%The payout request option simply does not appear. The account stays active; keep trading until the best day falls below 50%. The calculation resets after each approved payout. No consistency rule during evaluations. Legacy accounts bought before 1 March 2026 keep the old 30% rule.

IC Funded funded 2-StepFundedUnconfirmedFlagged, not smoothed over: no funded 2-Step consistency rule was found on IC Funded's public pages in our 29 October 2026 check, while an earlier capture of the firm's Help Center cited a 70% cap, and a 26 October 2026 third-party check states funded 2-Step has no rule at all. Treat the 70% figure as unconfirmed until the firm's Help Center article is read directly.
Maven InstantPer payout cycle20%Largest winning day must not exceed 20% of the sum of profits from profitable days in the current cycle; losing days are excluded. The5ers High StakesAll stagesNo % capHigh Stakes has no percentage cap on any single day. It has a days rule instead — see its own section below.

The5ers: a days rule, not a percentage cap

The5ers High Stakes is the odd one out, and it belongs in its own section for that reason: it caps nothing about the size of your best day. Instead it requires 3 profitable days of at least 0.5% of initial balance in Step 1, Step 2 and for funded scaling. A profitable day is a day on which closed positions made a positive profit of at least 0.5%, measured from the lower of midnight balance and midnight equity against the previous day's balance. A trader with one huge day and nothing else fails the days rule, not a percentage rule — the distinction matters when you compare firms.

Three conflicts we are not smoothing over

1. Apex: is exactly 50% a pass or a fail?

Unresolved on Apex's own pages. Apex's payouts page states the strict version: no single profitable day may account for "50% or more" of total profit since the last approved payout, and at or over 50% the payout option does not appear. But a third-party analysis that read Apex's own consistency article in full reports the article contradicts itself: its body says the best day "must represent less than 50%", yet its example table marks exactly 50% as "Consistency Met".

Our advice: stay strictly under 50%. Treat exactly 50% as a fail until Apex corrects its own article — the strict reading is the one that cannot hurt you.

2. FTMO: two cutover dates, both still live

FTMO's 1-Step launch article carries an editor's note (updated 5 October 2026) saying the Consistency rule replaces the Best Day Rule for new 1-Step orders and merges from 5 October 2026, with earlier orders keeping the Best Day Rule. A trading update dated 8 October 2026 says the same change applies from Monday 12 October 2026, 9:00, with orders before that time staying under the Best Day Rule. Both pages are live and uncorrected. The 12 October update is the later, more specific instrument, but stating it as the sole cutover would contradict a live FTMO page — so check your own order or merge date, and assume the stricter rule (total profit including losing days) if you are unsure.

3. FXIFY: the Highest Daily Profit trap

Confirmed on FXIFY's own FAQ, and it is a real trap. On 2-Phase Classic funded accounts, the Highest Daily Profit (HDP) remains in the account after a withdrawal and does not reset. Worked example from the firm's own page: a $1,000 best day on $2,500 total profit is 40% — out of rule. Required total profit before the next withdrawal:

$1,000 ÷ 0.25 = $4,000

Withdrawing after a big day does not clear it. You must grow total profit until that old day is 25% or less again before the next withdrawal unlocks.

Worked examples: how to check yourself before payout day

FXIFY 2-Phase Classic

Best day $2,400 on $8,000 total profit = 30% — out of rule at a 25% cap. Required total: $2,400 ÷ 0.25 = $9,600. You need $1,600 more profit, without a bigger day, before withdrawing.

Apex Performance

Best day $3,000 since your last approved payout. Required total: $3,000 ÷ 0.50 = $6,000 — and per the strict reading above, you need more than $6,000, since exactly 50% is disputed. Losing days reduce net profit and therefore count against you here.

Maven Instant

Best winning day $800, profitable days totalling $5,000 = 16% — in rule. After a payout the calculation resets to zero and the next cycle is measured fresh, but you still need 3% of initial balance in profit before you can request.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prop firm consistency rule?

A cap on how much of your total profit can come from a single trading day, expressed as a percentage. It stops one lucky day from carrying an entire evaluation or payout, and it is measured as best-day profit divided by total profit.

Does breaking a consistency rule fail my account?

Usually no. On most firms in this guide it gates the next step — passing, a reward, or a payout — rather than breaching the account. You keep trading until your best day is small enough relative to total profit. Check the firm's own wording: FTMO 1-Step, FXIFY Lightning and Apex all state the account stays active.

Why did FTMO replace the Best Day Rule?

FTMO replaced it with the Consistency rule for new 1-Step orders in October 2026. The substantive change: the old rule measured the best day against positive days' profit only; the new rule measures it against total profit including losing days, which FTMO itself calls stricter. The cutover date is disputed between two live FTMO pages (5 vs 12 October 2026) — see the conflicts section.

Does FXIFY's Highest Daily Profit reset after a withdrawal?

No. On 2-Phase Classic funded accounts the Highest Daily Profit remains after a withdrawal and continues to set the consistency calculation until a bigger day replaces it. A withdrawal does not clear a big day.

Which firms have no consistency rule at all?

FTMO 2-Step has none; Apex has none during evaluations; FXIFY One Phase, Two Phase Standard, Two Phase Pro, Three Phase and Instant Standard have none; FundedNext Stellar challenges and Standard cycles have none (only the optional On-Demand payout route adds a 40% condition); IC Funded's 2-Step evaluation phases have none found.

Does The5ers have a consistency rule?

Not a percentage cap. High Stakes requires 3 profitable days of at least 0.5% of initial balance per stage — a days-count rule, not a best-day percentage. The5ers' generic consistency article uses 50%/30% worked examples but states no High Stakes percentage.

What to do with this before you buy

Three checks, in order: (1) find your programme's row above and note whether the rule gates evaluation, funding or payout; (2) check whether losing days count in the denominator — it changes the maths; (3) if your best day is already large, work out the required total profit (best day ÷ cap) before you plan a payout around it. And re-confirm the rule at checkout: firms change these pages without notice, and this guide is dated 30 October 2026 for exactly that reason.
